Homeopathy is an alternative medicine system developed in the late 18th century by German physician Samuel Hahnemann.

It is based on the principle of “like cures like,” meaning that a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat similar symptoms in a sick person.

Homeopthic remedies can be from the animal, vegetable, or mineral domains. Those symptoms that emanated when healthy people ingested a remedy over time are recorded in a Homeopathic Repertory and a Materia Medica.

In homeopathic practice, a diluted substance is used to treat the patient. The process involves repeatedly diluting the substance in water or alcohol and shaking it, known as “succussion.” This dilution process continues until you are beyond Avogadro’s Number and there is no longer any physical substance, but rather the “vibrational signal” of the substances.

Homeopathic practitioners believe the more the substance is diluted, the more powerful its healing potential becomes. They also think that the succussion process imparts an “energy” or “vibration” to the remedy, which helps to stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Homeopathic remedies are used to treat a wide range of physical and mental symptoms, including common ailments such as colds, flu, headaches, and digestive problems. They are also used to treat more serious conditions such as cancer, allergies, and depression.

One of the critical differences between homeopathy and conventional medicine is that homeopathic remedies are individualized for each patient. A homeopathic practitioner will consider the patient’s overall health, lifestyle, and personality, as well as the specific symptom they are experiencing when selecting a remedy. This contrasts with conventional medicine, where a standard treatment is typically prescribed for a particular condition.

Classical vs. Non Classical Homeopathy

Classical homeopathy as practiced by Dr. Hahnemann is based on finding the one remedy that best matches the symptoms of the presenting patient, be it for an acute or chronic condition. When a person develops symptoms it is in response to their “vital force” being effected and different people will manifest different symptoms. For example, two children come down with a fever and a sore throat.;a throat culture is taken and they both have ‘strep’ . In Western medicine an antibiotic would be given to both children. A homeopathic approach is quite different. One of the children has a dry fever, is thirsty for cold drinks, is flushed and wants to be left alone; the other is perspiring, is not thirsty, is pale, and wants to be held. Looking into a homeopathic repertory, where symptoms have been recorded of provings, a homeopath will match the presenting symptoms with the symptoms developed during provings. This will lead to each child receiving different, individualized remedies to help their systems return to homeostasis so that the “strep” returns to the normal state at which they are always present.

Non classical homeopathy is  combining various remedies into a single remedy. An advantage of combination remedies is they contain various remedies known to help certain conditions, for example the  symptoms of the flu.If someone is not knowledgeable in homeopathy, although it is a “shotgun” approach, combination remedies are often helpful in relief of acute symptoms. In our office we find certain mixed homeopathics very helpful in detoxification.

TAU Study Introduces Effective Oxygen Treatment for Millions of Long-Covid Sufferers

as reported by Jewish Press News Desk

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber at Whole-Body Medicine Fairfield CT

A groundbreaking new study from Tel Aviv University, the first of its kind in the world, found a promising treatment for long-term COVID-19 symptoms, based on advanced Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).

To date, no effective therapy has been suggested, leaving many millions of sufferers around the world with no remedy.

Long COVID, which affects up to 30% of patients infected by the COVID-19 virus, is characterized by a range of debilitating cognitive symptoms such as inability to concentrate, brain fog, forgetfulness, and difficulty recalling words or thoughts – persisting for more than three months, and sometimes up to two years. The researchers: “Our study is the first randomized controlled trial to demonstrate a real solution for long COVID.

Patients exposed to an intensive protocol of HBOT treatments showed significant improvement compared to the control group.

For millions suffering from long-term COVID-19 symptoms, the study provides new hope for recovery.”

Brain Scan showing improved blood flow in post covid patients HBOT studyThe study was conducted by the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research at Tel Aviv University and Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh). It was led by Prof. Shai Efrati, director of the Sagol Center and a faculty member at TAU’s Sackler School of Medicine and Sagol School of Neuroscience, and by Dr. Shani-Itskovich Zilberman from the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and TAU’s Sackler School of Medicine. Other chief contributors were Dr. Merav Catalogna, a lead data scientist from the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh), and Dr. Amir Hadanny from the Sagol Center and TAU’s Sackler School of Medicine. The paper was published in Scientific Reports (Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves neurocognitive functions and symptoms of the post-COVID condition: randomized controlled trial

Prof. Efrati explained: “Today we understand that in some patients, the COVID-19 virus penetrates the brain through the cribriform plate, the part of the skull located just above our nose, and triggers chronic brain injury – mainly in brain regions in the frontal lobe, responsible for cognitive function, mental status, and pain interpretation. Consequently, affected patients experience a long-term cognitive decline, with symptoms such as brain fog, loss of concentration, and mental fatigue.”

In addition, since the frontal lobe is damaged patients may suffer from mood disturbance, depression, and anxiety. These clinical symptoms, identified in patients all over the world, were corroborated by the World Health Organization in an official definition of so-called ‘long COVID,’ issued in October 2021, including cognitive dysfunction as one of the common symptoms.

A recent study from the Universities of Cambridge and Exeter reported that 78% of long-term COVID-19 patients experienced difficulties with concentration, 69% reported brain fog, and 68% reported forgetfulness. Thus, long-term COVID-19 effects can be very detrimental to the sufferer’s quality of life, and no effective treatment has yet been found.

“In our study, we harnessed HBOT, already proven effective in the treatment of other forms of brain injury (such as stroke, trauma, age-related cognitive decline and treatment-resistant PTSD), to the global effort to find a solution for long COVID-19,” Prof. Efrati said.

The study, designed as a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, included 73 patients with reported post-COVID-19 cognitive symptoms such as inability to concentrate, brain fog, forgetfulness, and difficulty recalling words or thoughts, persisting for more than three months following an RT-PCR test confirming COVID-19 infection.

Participants were divided into two groups: 37 patients received HBOT treatment, while 36 patients served as a sham-controlled group, receiving placebo treatment. Both patients and investigators were unaware of their designated treatment protocol.

The unique protocol consisted of 40 daily HBOT sessions, five sessions per week within two months, in which patients entered a multi-place HBOT chamber and breathed 100% oxygen by mask at 2 atmospheres absolute (ATA) for 90 minutes with oxygen fluctuations. The control group received a placebo treatment, breathing normal air.

In addition, all participants underwent a computerized cognitive test, as well as advanced high-resolution brain imaging (profusion MRI and DTI) at two points in time – when entering the trial and after its completion.

The results were highly encouraging: patients treated with HBOT showed significant improvement, while in the control group long COVID symptoms remained largely unchanged.

In HBOT-treated patients, the greatest improvements were exhibited in the global cognitive function, attention, and executive functions (the capacity to plan, organize, initiate, self-monitor, and control one’s responses to achieve a goal).

Other benefits included better information processing speed, improved psychiatric symptoms, more mental energy, better sleep quality, and less body pain.

All clinical findings were correlated with the participants’ brain images, indicating a significant change in the parts of the brain related to each function, which had been visibly damaged by the COVID-19 virus.

Dr. Shani-Itskovich Zilberman said: “We know that HBOT repairs brain damage through a process of regeneration – generating new neurons and blood vessels. We believe that the beneficial effects of the unique treatment protocol in this study can be attributed to renewed neuroplasticity and increased brain perfusion in regions associated with cognitive and emotional roles.”

Prof. Efrati said: “For the first time, our study proposes an effective treatment for the debilitating long COVID syndrome, repairing brain injury with an intensive protocol of HBOT. Moreover, the study reveals the very real biological damage to brain tissues induced by the COVID-19 virus, and how repairing this damage reduces symptoms and can eventually lead to recovery. From a broader perspective, these findings can also suggest that other neurological and psychiatric syndromes might be triggered by biological agents such as viruses, opening new possibilities for future treatments.”

Note: For patients with long COVID and other neurological disorders, reliable high-quality HBOT is now available at Aviv Clinics in Florida and Dubai, international arms of the Sagol Center at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) in Israel, administering the same strict protocols, with additional cognitive, physical, and nutrition support provided to patients.

Beating cancer starts with knowing you have it. One of the most terrifying diagnoses is cancer. In 2018, 1,708,921 new cancer cases were reported, and 599,265 people died of cancer. For every 100,000 people, there are 436 new cancer cases, and 149 die of cancer. While many with family histories of cancer tend to be more concerned, only about 5-10% of cancer cases are inherited. Often, the shared risk behaviors account for cancers in family members. According to a study from the Archives of Internal Medicine, only 25-50% of new cancer treatments that reach the stage of randomized controlled studies will prove successful. For cancers that are easier to diagnose and treat, 80% will survive more than ten years. However, less than 20% of people diagnosed with difficult-to-diagnose or treat cancers survive ten years or more.

Whether undergoing conventional cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation; or alternative methods including nutritional therapies, diet and lifestyle changes, acupuncture, meditation, ozone, or other treatment modalities, the most effective way to protect oneself is discovering cancer early when it is most treatable and fully eradicated.

Most cancers show no symptoms until later stages when treatment options may be limited or too late. Furthermore, 71% of cancers are not normally or able to be screened.

When cancers are diagnosed early, before they have had time to spread, the overall survival rate is 5x higher. Early cancer detection is essential to improve treatment outcomes and survival. The vast majority of cancers show no symptoms until later stages when treatment options may be limited. Today many cancers are found too late when outcomes are poor.

At Whole-Body Medicine we are excited to offer the *Galleri™ multi-cancer early detection test to our patients. This first-of-its-kind teGalleri Multi-Cancer Early Detection Testst detects more than 50 types of cancer through a simple blood draw.

The Galleri Cancer Screening Test can detect cancer signals very early on in the body and distinguish which tissue the cancer comes from. The Galleri test is more sensitive than any other cancer screening test available. For example, Cologuard, the colon screening test, only finds 3.7% of cancers. In contrast, Galleri has a predictive value of 50%. This predictive value means that if a cancer is detected, there is a 50% chance that it is present. Furthermore, there is only a 0.5% false negative rate. This 0.5% false negative rate means that for every 1000 patients tested; only five will have a false negative result. Thus, a negative result rules out cancer in the body for 995/1000 people.

Galleri does not rely upon genetic predisposition; instead, it tests for actual cancer footprints that can be too early for other screening or diagnostic methods to detect. If positive, this early detection and intervention can help save people from cancer.

When cancer is detected in its earliest stages, more cancer treatments may be available and survival rates may be improved. Be in control of your health and call us today at 203-371-8258 ext. 2 and schedule an appointment with Dr. Jennifer Letitia to learn more and determine if the Galleri test may be right for you.

*The Galleri test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those aged 50 or older. It is intended to be used in addition to, and not replace, other cancer screening tests.

Happy and Healthy Middle-Aged CoupleWhether the goal is to alleviate symptoms; help with fertility or libido; improve mood, energy, bone, cardiac and/or cognitive health; or to simply maximize health and slow aging, the evaluation, support, and correction of hormonal levels and imbalances with bioidentical hormone therapy are integral to achieving optimal health.

There are multiple factors that must be taken into consideration as we aim to achieve whole-body health, and one of the most important and often overlooked of these is hormones.

Hormones are responsible for the regulation of many processes, including digestion, metabolism, respiration, sensory perception, sleep, lactation, growth and development, movement, reproduction, and mood.

Specialized cells called endocrine glands produce chemical messengers that then travel to parts of the body where they regulate physiology and behavior; thus, they are important for optimal functioning and maintenance of the body.

The body produces and circulates approximately 50 hormones in the major endocrine glands, such as the pituitary, pineal, thymus, thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, testes in men, and ovaries in women. Many symptoms can result from a deficiency, excess, or imbalance of hormones, including weight gain or loss, infertility, decreased libido, osteoporosis, headaches, mood swings, fatigue, brain fog, erectile dysfunction, increased risk of cancer, dry skin, diarrhea, constipation, hair loss, cognitive difficulties, heart palpitations, blood sugar issues, night sweats, changes in menstruation, acne, and other problems. Hormones bind to receptor proteins on cells, causing a change in the cells’ functions. Factors that interfere with binding of the hormone can disrupt the function of that hormone. For example, xenoestrogens are chemicals in the environment that mimic estrogen, often at much stronger levels than natural estrogen. They can be found in water, pesticides, cleaning products, plastics, and canned foods, and, among other effects, they can cause feminizing effects in males and fertility issues in females. To minimize xenoestrogens it is important to drink filtered water, eat organic when possible, and use only non-toxic cleaning, personal hygiene, and chemical products.

Cortisol: The Stress Hormone

Hormones should be maintained at physiological levels and in proper balance. Fortunately, certain key hormones can be evaluated and treated to achieve proper levels, including cortisol—the stress hormone. Secreted by the adrenal glands, cortisol can help control mood, motivation, and fear. It is also involved in how the body manages carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and has effects on inflammation, blood pressure, the wake/sleep cycle, immunity, and energy needed to deal with stress.

Under stress, cortisol shuts down functions that are not high priority, such as digestion, immune function, growth, and reproduction. This may cause anxiety, depression, headaches, heart disease, memory and concentration problems, digestion problems, sleep issues, and weight gain. Too much cortisol production may not only lead to a catabolic state where everything is in “breakdown” mode, but cortisol production may wane over time. Furthermore, high cortisol interferes with other hormones, contributing to insulin resistance and blood sugar regulation that may progress to diabetes. Thyroid hormone production, conversion to its active form and its binding to cell receptors, is directly inhibited by elevated cortisol. Since the thyroid is important for metabolism, mood, bone health, and digestion, any interference in thyroid hormone can contribute to symptoms such as weight gain, brain fog, fatigue, and depression. Additionally, inflammation from stress, food, infections, mold, and environmental toxins can affect cortisol and insulin and decrease vitamin D, melatonin (affecting the sleep cycle), testosterone, DHEA, and other sex hormones.

Pregnenalone is the precursor, or building-block, for all other steroid hormones. It is converted directly into DHEA and/or progesterone. DHEA is an anabolic hormone that helps balance cortisol levels, is a precursor to other hormones such as testosterone and estrogen, and is important for energy, bone health, and immune function. As people age DHEA naturally decreases, leading to issues with fatigue, osteoporosis, mood issues, and vaginal atrophy.

Using bioidentical hormones to supplement DHEA can slow the aging process and improve well-being, cognitive function, energy, and body composition.

The Sex Hormones

The sex hormones—estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone—and their metabolites are responsible for sexual development, function, and desire. They also play a role in regulating bone and muscle growth, inflammatory responses, cholesterol levels, hair growth, body fat distribution, and sense of well-being. Sex hormone levels fluctuate throughout a person’s life and can be affected by stress, inflammation, medications, exercise, food, aging, and toxins, all of which can influence the hormones and contribute to menstrual and menopausal symptoms, sexual dysfunction, and fertility issues.

Imbalances or deficiencies of estrogen can cause changes in menstruation and premenstrual or menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, lumps in the breasts and/or uterus, mood changes, sleeping problems, weight gain, low sex drive, vaginal dryness and atrophy, fatigue, depression, and anxiety. High levels of estrogen in males can lead to infertility, erectile dysfunction, and gynecomastia (breasts). Properly evaluating estrogen levels and supplementing with bioidentical hormones therapy can allow for management and potential alleviation of these symptoms. Furthermore, decreased estrogen levels during the first five years of menopause leads to increased bone loss. Supplementing estrogen during this time can help decrease bone loss, though not all women need estrogen replacement since estrogens are made by fat cells. Proper evaluation is necessary to determine an appropriate hormone replacement plan.

Progesterone is a hormone that is key to fertilization and pregnancy, helping the endometrium prepare for implantation of the fertilized egg. Low levels of progesterone can interfere with pregnancy and carrying pregnancies to term. Because progesterone is secreted by the egg sac following release of the egg at menstruation, it decreases with age, particularly during the perimenopausal years when eggs are not always released monthly. This may lead to too much unopposed estrogen and result in decreased sex drive, weight gain, gallbladder issues, and increased risk of breast and uterine cancer. Additionally, low progesterone contributes to osteoporosis, oftentimes occurring before menopause. Supplementing progesterone with bioidentical hormone therapy can help regulate blood pressure, improve mood and sleep, ease anxiety, help prevent overgrowth of certain cells that can lead to cancer, improve bone density, decrease migraines, aid fluid balance, improve libido and vaginal dryness, and decrease menopausal hot flashes and night sweats. Bioidentical progesterone supplementation will also increase the sensitivity of estrogen receptors, thus increasing the effects of estrogen.

Testosterone is the major male hormone important for sexual development and function. In puberty, testosterone is responsible for males developing deep voices and facial hair, increasing muscle mass, and developing sperm. As men age or with increased inflammation from a variety of causes, testosterone will decrease, causing symptoms such as low libido, fatigue, reduced lean muscle mass, irritability, erectile dysfunction, obesity, depression, loss of body hair, poor memory and focus, low energy, and poor endurance. Low testosterone has also been associated with metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and abdominal fat), cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

In women, high levels of testosterone can cause frontal balding, acne, an enlarged clitoris, increased muscle mass, and deepening of the voice. Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition in which high testosterone can cause obesity, acne, thinning or excessive hair, menstrual irregularity, and difficulty becoming pregnant. It is also associated with insulin resistance, low levels of HDL cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, high blood pressure, increased risk for cardiovascular disease, and higher levels of circulating male hormones. A decrease in testosterone in women, which invariably occurs at menopause, can cause decreased libido, osteoporosis, and other symptoms. Bioidentical testosterone replacement may help alleviate these symptoms.

Hormone Treatment and Therapy

Fortunately, specialized tests can be used to measure key hormones and their metabolites and specific treatment protocols using bioidentical hormones can then be created and used to help correct imbalances.

Treatment may include nutritional supplements, herbs, and prescriptions. When using hormone replacement therapy, it is important to use bioidentical hormones that directly mimic hormones in the body, as synthetic hormones are often associated with many undesirable side effects, such as heart attacks, stroke, and cancer (e.g., uterine cancer from use of progestins).

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for estrogen, DHEA, progesterone, and testosterone can be administered in many forms, depending on the hormone and the wishes of the patient. Topical creams, sublingual drops, and implanted pellets are the most common. Hormone levels are then followed, along with improvement in symptoms, energy, mood, and libido, and adjusted as needed to achieve the best results. Pregnenolone, adaptogenic herbs, and vitamins are often used to support the adrenals and cortisol stress response. The thyroid can be treated with thyroid hormone and/or herbs that support thyroid hormone production. In addition, supplements to decrease inflammation are often an important component of the treatment plan.

When fertility is an issue, treating ongoing infections such as Lyme disease, eliminating heavy metals such as mercury and lead, and optimizing nutrition and mineral levels can be important adjunctive treatments. Estrogen and progesterone levels can be measured throughout the monthly cycle and if necessary can be adjusted to improve fertility and the ability to carry a pregnancy. Additionally, stress support efforts such as meditation, appropriate exercise, and a nutritionally dense diet free of toxins and additives provide the necessary nutrients for production and metabolism of hormones. Since inflammation directly affects hormone levels, addressing sources of inflammation such as infection, dietary stress, toxins, and injuries is also vital.

There are many natural, herbal supplements that can be used to help balance hormone levels. Here are just a few examples:

  • Nigella seed (also known as fennel flower or black cumin seed):Nigella sativa can help regulate testosterone and thyroid hormone levels and behaves similarly to estrogen in the body.
  • Black cohosh root:This supplement has been used, historically and today, to alleviate menstrual issues, PMS, and symptoms of menopause.
  • Ashwaganda:When taken regularly, ashwaganda helps lower cortisol levels and may also help balance insulin levels and reproductive hormones.

Whether the goal is to alleviate symptoms; help with fertility or libido; improve mood, energy, bone, cardiac and/or cognitive health; or to simply maximize health and slow aging, the evaluation, support, and correction of hormonal levels and imbalances are integral to achieving optimal health.

Summary:

Post-COVID-19 Syndrome, often known as Long-Haul Syndrome, represents a complex multi-factorial phenomenon that is being observed clinically in a significant percentage of those individuals that have recovered from initial acute COVID-19, but have far from fully recovered. There are millions of people suffering from ongoing persistent fatigue and malaise, joint pain and body aches, tachycardia, headaches, brain-fog, strange neurological symptoms, and many more problems long after the initial illness associated with SARS-CoV2 has passed. They are being observed both in the developed and under-developed world. It is becoming very clear that Long-Haul Syndrome is a complex entity and may represent the result of a “perfect storm” of biological and environmental factors and that a systems-biology
approach, utilizing a wider-lens perspective, will be required as these subjects are approached clinically. There exists considerable gaps between the focus of the initial research into this phenomenon and the current approach to these conditions in standard clinical medicine, with standard interventions based predominantly on symptom control. This expert panel with review the various hypotheses proposed to explain this emerging post-pandemic epidemic. Discussion elements will include an exploration of why some go on to suffer from long-term
symptoms, and many do not. The role of the immune system and its complicated reaction and adaptations to SARS-CoV-2, post-viral vascular/endothelial/glycocalyx aberrations, alterations in the GI microbiota and microbial metabolites, molecular mimicry, and other aspects of pathogenesis will also be explored along with how these may serve as leverage points for new diagnostics and clinical interventions.

Objectives:

1. Appreciate the current epidemiologic trends in
post-COVID Long Haul Syndrome.

2. Understand the linkage and association between Long-Haul and factors including immunological cytokine patterns, vascular abnormalities, the GI microbiota, ongoing stealth infections, molecular mimicry, and other
elements.

3. Appreciate the available emerging clinical
laboratory testing related to long-haul diagnosis, and clinical management, including complex cytokine pattern analysis, qPCR molecular-based evaluation of the GI microbiota, antigen testing, and others.

4. Understand the available evidence-based drug, nutritional, lifestyle and complementary therapeutic interventions for autoimmune disorders.

5. Become enlightened on the “patient experience”
and strategies of collaborative care for patients with long-haul syndrome.

General Outline:

1.
Opening statement and panelist introductions by Dr.
Brady.

2.
5-minute opening statement by each panelist outlining
their specific interests and areas of clinical or research focus regarding long-haul syndrome.

The Power of Oneness | Homeopathic Patient Stories

As I sit overlooking the water of a beautiful lake surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, I hear the refrain “God is Oneness.” In everything and everyone, there is God, and from the animal, vegetable, mineral, or human kingdom, there is oneness. I marvel at the gift given to us with homeopathy, how a homeopathic remedy can unlock that oneness that unites everything at a vibrational level, and how it can have a profound healing effect when given according to homeopathic principles.

In this newsletter, I would like to provide some cases demonstrating how homeopathic remedies from different kingdoms can improve one’s health.

CASSINIA

Cassinia, a 55-year-old woman, came to see me because she had tried many things and was not getting better; she was getting worse. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 feeling great emotionally and physically and 1 feeling like not getting out of bed, Cassinia was a four. She had never been a 9-10, with her highest consistency number being an 8. Five years ago, she was a 6-7.

Cassinia’s chief complaints were brain fog, low energy, depression, sinus obstruction, and constant lower back pain. Initial EAV (Electrodermal Acupucture According to Voll) testing showed that her mesenchyme was blocked, and she was toxic with heavy metals, pesticides, chemicals, and more. (I find every sick individual is toxic to at least the three listed).

Cassinia had a root canal that bothered her and after watching the documentary Root Cause, she decided to investigate if her root canal was the source of her problems. All these symptoms and more had been present for many years. Combination homeopathics opened her mesenchyme and were used to lower her toxic burden.

Treating the toxic physical layer (see, You Look Like an Egg to Me) allowed the single remedy working at the non-physical level to “communicate better” with her total being.

Using this dual approach of treating at the physical and nonphysical levels, the single correct remedy was able to have a profound impact on healing. Cassinia was given a remedy from the plant kingdom, specifically a nut. Over four months, she had resolution or improvement in many symptoms and reported a 7 level. Extraction of the root canal tooth brought her to an 8-9, and needless to say, Cassini was thrilled.

SADIE

Sadie, 45 years old, was an 8-9 until an environmental exposure to new carpeting brought her to a 1. Her weight went down from 130 pounds to 97 pounds in a few months. Sadie was reacting to everything. She had various treatments, including mold treatment, and was more or less stabilized at a five unless she reacted to something which then brought her down to a 1 to 2. Her inflammatory markers were high, and Sadie felt “weak, fragile, and emotionally unbalanced.” Her work was mentally taxing, and because she did not have the energy or clarity of thought, Sadie had not worked for over a year. She had no mercury fillings and just one root canal.

I gave Sadie a combination of homeopathic detox remedies for chemicals and solvents and a single remedy derived from the mineral kingdom- a metal. In only four weeks, Sadie was up to a 6-7 and reported: “definitely reacting less and steadily improving.” She also felt less inflamed. Four months after beginning treatment, she is starting to exercise, and she is even lifting weights which she was too weak to do before treatment.

Sadie is a 7-8 and continues to improve.

JULIA

Julia, 29 years old, has no root canals or mercury fillings; she has seen me since childhood. When she came in for a hygiene visit, she presented with inflamed gums even with excellent home care. However, her chief complaint was skin rashes; various food sensitivities that would exacerbate the rashes and cause intense itching. She would scratch until she bled. She had mental fogginess and lately had been irritable, even losing her temper, and she had lots of anxiety and felt overwhelmed. Her menses were very painful and heavy and would occur every 24 to 35 days. She rated herself a 6. Julia’s toxicity level was low, so a single homeopathic remedy was the only treatment. In this case; the remedy was from the fish kingdom – the cuttlefish. Over the next four months, Julia’s food sensitivities disappeared along with her rashes. Her menses came every 28 days with very mild cramping. Her anxiety improved dramatically, and she felt great. Her inflamed gums became normal. Julia now says that she is a 9.

STEVE

Steve, 46 years old, presented with a mouthful of mercury fillings. He complained about low energy, low libido, and lack of motivation causing his business to suffer. He had chronic sinus problems, and his joints ached and were very stiff upon awakening. He frequently had heart palpitations even though all tests were negative. He didn’t exercise, and he was a couch potato, something very different from when he was in his 20s. He felt he was a 4. Energetic testing showed Steve was toxic.

He was started on combination homeopathics to remove pesticides and a single homeopathic remedy. After the first month, he felt a little better. At that point I removed his mercury fillings. The following month, Steve thought he was a 6. Continuing homeopathic treatment for the physical and nonphysical levels, Steve continued to improve. He began to exercise; he felt his sinuses were 90% better, his joints didn’t hurt, his business was better, his heart palpitations were gone, and his girlfriend was happier! Steve felt he was a 9. His remedy was derived from the reptile kingdom – a snake remedy.

In Conclusion

As we can see from the above cases, various remedies from different kingdoms can help patients. However, in reality, were they different?

When we drill down (no pun intended) deeper and deeper, we realize we have reached the essence of each individual, which is at the level of the oneness of the universe, to that level of holiness that connects everything.

As you lay back in the dentist’s chair at the dentist’s office the last thing you are probably thinking about is the poor sleep that you have been getting recently. However, as you talk to your dentist, you begin to realize that your sleep and dental health are directly related.

How can that be, you may ask?

Sleep breathing disorders are often first detected by a dentist. These disorders are usually found rooted within the muscles in the back of the throat, tongue size, jaw size, all areas that dentists see as they examine you. One of the most common sleep breathing disorders is sleep apnea.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea is a condition in which there are repeated breathing interruptions during a sleep cycle. Some signs that you may have sleep apnea are:

  • Snoring
  • Someone telling you that you stopped breathing during your sleep
  • Waking up with a dry mouth
  • Morning headaches
  • Trouble staying asleep
  • Trouble staying awake during the day
  • Irritability
  • GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)

There are several different types of sleep apnea. They are as follows.

  1. Obstructive sleep apnea is when the muscles in your throat relax while you are sleeping, which causes your airway to narrow as you breathe in. Which, in turn, results in you not getting enough oxygen. Your brain recognizes this and wakes you up so that your airway can reopen. You usually do not recall this happening because it happens quickly.
  2. Central sleep apnea is less common, and results from your brain not signaling your breathing muscles. This means that your brain forgets to remind you to breathe as you sleep.
  3. Complex sleep apnea syndrome is a combination of the two other forms of sleep apnea.
  4. Hypopnea is a mild apnea; however, the results can be the same even though not as severe as frank apnea.

How is this related to your dental health?

Grinding or clenching of your teeth is often associated with a sleep breathing disorder, like sleep apnea. This grinding or clenching can lead to headaches, worn down teeth, pain in your jaw, and TMD (temporomandibular dysfunction). In addition to teeth clenching, continuous snoring wears down your oral health. As you snore, your mouth begins to dry out; there less saliva fighting off bacteria. This allows bacteria and other organisms to multiply leading to infections, sores, and decay.

How is this related to overall health?

People with sleep apnea have a higher incidence of stroke, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, and dementia.

How do I know if I have a sleep breathing disorder?

Oral factors that are taken into consideration when looking at sleep apnea are things such as:

  • Size of your jaws
  • Sleep Bruxism
  • What your tongue looks like, scalloped edges are an indicator of sleep apnea
  • What your throat looks like, redness can be an indication of excess snoring.
  • Neck size
  • Weight

What can you do if you suspect a sleep breathing disorder?

Talk to your dentist during your next check-up. If they suspect sleep apnea, they can help connect you to a sleep study so that it can be verified. A sleep study will track your sleep and mark your snoring, sleep position, oxygen levels as well as any apnea. A 3D Dental CAT Scan offers a powerful airway analysis function (restrictive airway and airway volume).

Once you have been diagnosed with a sleep breathing disorder, your doctor can make some recommendations based on your situation. Some of the treatments for sleep breathing disorders are as follows:

  • Lifestyle changes. These changes can include losing weight, exercising regularly, avoiding certain medications, changing sleeping positions, and no smoking.
  • The use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices can provide air pressure through a mask while you sleep. This additional air pressure is used to keep your airway open, which prevents apnea and snoring.
  • Fabrication of an oral sleep appliance that helps open the airway.
  • Seeking the care of a holistic health practitioner knowledgeable in detoxification and versed homeopathic treatment for sleep apnea.
  • Surgery is usually only used when other options have not worked. Surgeries that may be recommended are surgeries to rework the tissue in your throat or back of your mouth, alter your jaw structure, or nerve stimulation.

These comprehensive sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) treatments are simply some of the ways to help treat your sleep breathing disorder.

At Breiner Whole-Body Health Center in Fairfield, CT, we will look at every aspect of your health to ensure that you receive the best treatments for you. We can help you from the dentist chair to the sleep study to finding you a treatment that works for you.

Have you ever found yourself wondering if there was more to medicine then simply taking pills to control pain?

Osteopathic medicine or osteopathic care believes that there is more to medicine than medication. This type of medicine focuses on every part of a person when entering into a treatment rather than simply focusing on the issue that is presented. Those that practice this type of medicine are called doctors of osteopathic medicine, and they know that your lifestyle affects your health.

What is the difference between a DO and a MD?

Doctors of osteopathic medicine (DO)  differ from doctors of medicine (MD) in the schooling that they received. Both went to school and took the exams to become a licensed doctor. However while in school DOs included a focus on the skeletal and muscular systems. This extra focus is used to conform a diagnosis, in addition to aiding them in different techniques that are used by DOs to promote wellness. In addition, DOs tend to look at a whole body. This holistic approach to medicine leads DOs to lean towards family practices and general internal practices, though both DOs like MDs can specialize.

What is the goal of a DO?

  • Ease symptoms
  • Prevent future symptoms
  • Ease stress
  • Help your body heal itself

What does a typical appointment with a DO look like?

When entering into an appointment with a DO they will likely want to do a  complete physical, even if you only came in for a headache. Along with a physical the doctor will ask you questions about your life. This will include questions that range from what you eat in a day to your relationship with your family.

This complet look into your life will help the doctor to uncover any underlying symptoms. For example if you came in with a headache and when asked about your family, you go into a long rant about a sick family member that you’ve been staying up late with to take care of. This rant helps the DO to understand that your headache may be coming from stress as well as lack of sleep.

With this information the doctor can recommend more sleep to help your body begin to naturally begin to heal itself. instead of giving you a prescription for headache medicine the DO gave you a solution that will not only help you during this particular situation, but will help you in the future.

Techniques that DOs use:

One of the most commonly used techniques used by doctors of osteopathic medicine is called osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). This is a hands on technique that is used to diagnose and treat illness and injury. While using this technique the doctor will use their hands to move your muscles and joints by using a series of stretches, as well as gentle pressure and resistance.

OMT is often used to muscle pain as well as:

  • Back pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Asthma
  • Migraines
  • Menstrual pain
  • Carpal tunnel

This treatment may leave you feeling sore due to the pressure applied and stretching. Other than that though there should be no other side effects.

Is OMT right for me?

This treatment may be right for you if you have suffered from any of the aforementioned illnesses or pain. Your DO may suggest only using OMT or they may suggest using it in conjunction with another form of treatment. Other treatments could include:

  • Medicine
  • Therapy
  • Lifestyle change

A lifestyle change could include things such as more exercise, a healthier diet, better nights sleep, and reducing stress. Because DOs believe in a holistic approach to wellness, they believe that the way that you live your life affects every part of your health.

How can we help?

When looking for a pain management center in Fairfield, CT look no further than Breiner Whole Body Wellness. We believe that every part of your body is integral to your wellness journey. Anxiety and depression have seen a steady increase in cases in recent years. Though the two are two separate conditions, it is not uncommon for someone that has depression to also have anxiety. With an increase of cases, we have begun to hear more about depression and anxiety. But do we really know what these conditions look like?

Anxiety

Anxiety is our brain and body’s reaction to stressful and unfamiliar situations. While a certain amount of anxiety is helpful in keeping us alert to situations, anxiety disorders can lead a person to being completely incapacitated by their fear and anxiety about situations. There are several different types of anxiety disorders, some of them are as follows:

  • Social anxiety disorder. This is where a person experiences excessive fear in regards to being publicly embarrassed.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder. This is an anxiety disorder that develops after a person has been exposed to a traumatic event.
  • Generalized anxiety disorder. This is where a person experiences chronic anxiety even when there is little to provoke it.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder. This is an anxiety disorder where a person experiences repeated unwanted thoughts and/or repeated behaviors.

Depression

Depression is a disorder that affects the way that a person feels, thinks, and acts. It is generally characterized by feelings of sadness or hopelessness that go beyond being simply upset about something. Mild forms of depression differ from major depressive disorders (MDD) in that MDD are long-lasting and intense bouts of depression that interfere with daily activities. Some symptoms of MDD are as follows:

  • Lack of interest in doing activities
  • Change in appetite
  • Weight fluctuation
  • Fatigue
  • Excessive feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Suicidal thoughts

Causes

While we are able to speculate on what causes anxiety and depressive disorders there is no one for sure known cause. Some theories are that they are caused by things such as:

  • Genetics
  • Stress
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Chronic illness
  • Sleep imbalance

Effects

The effects that both anxiety and depression have on your body are numerous. Both anxiety and depression affect the brain, and at times cause it to either shrink or become inflamed. This shrinking and inflation affect the brain’s ability to learn, regulate moods, and remember things.

Treatments:

The first step is seeking professional help. While it can be helpful to talk to people that are important to you about what is going on, seeking professional help can help you find a treatment that is best for your symptoms. This step is often the hardest because of the stigmas that revolve around mental health, but this is the most important step.

Once you have talked to a medical professional, like those Breiner Whole Body Wellness, they will give you a treatment plan. There are a few different anxiety and depression treatment options. They include, but are not limited to: lifestyle changes, medication and therapy.

Lifestyle changes:

Changing your lifestyle can have a positive on your mental health.

  • Exercising both your body and mind regularly
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Reducing stress
  • Getting between 7-8 hours of sleep per night
  • Laughing
  • Meditating

These things can help to reduce the anxiety and depression that you experience in your life.

Medication:

Medication does not work for everyone, however for some it is helpful in stabilizing their hormones which helps to reduce anxiety and depression. Taking meditation as well as engaging in another form of treatment has been found to have the most positive effect in reducing anxiety and depression.

Therapy:

Therapy has been proven to help in treating anxiety and depression. There are several different therapies that can help, they are:

  • Brain Performance Therapy. This therapy maps out the way that your brain functions and works to improve it.
  • Cognitive-behavioral Therapy. This therapy focuses on understanding and changing thinking and behavior patterns.
  • Exposure Therapy. This therapy slowly introduces the source of a person’s anxiety in a safe setting, allowing them to become less sensitive to the situation over time.
  • Interpersonal Therapy. This therapy is a short term therapy that focuses on finding a resolution to interpersonal problems.

These are simply some of the therapies that are out there. Talking with your doctor can help you find the therapy that is best for you.

How can we help:

Here at Brainer Whole Body Wellness in Fairfield, CT we are dedicated to helping you live the best life possible. We have an excellent anxiety and depression treatment center.
